This Fort Lee colonial had good bones and a dated, compartmentalized interior. The brick shell, the original chimney masonry, and the mature lot were all worth keeping — almost nothing else was.

We took the house down to the studs. Walls came out to open the kitchen into the dining and living areas, the stairway was rebuilt with stained treads and a volute-capped railing, and the original brick chimney breast was left exposed as a interior feature rather than boxed back in. New systems, new millwork, and refinished flooring were carried through every level.

The finished home reads open and current while keeping what made the original worth saving. The kitchen pairs full-height shaker cabinetry with a stone-topped peninsula and a herringbone tile accent. The primary bath sets a glass shower and soaking tub against subway tile and matte black fixtures. A custom walk-in closet, a serving station off the stair hall, and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace anchor the main living space, which opens through glass sliders to the pool and rear yard.
